Version 6.0
WORKING DEMO
"I love your program and having all the information in one place and easy
to access. I have seen other programs, but feel yours is the best."
....Marlita J., Concord, CA, PRS User.
Starline Kennels proudly introduces you to our exciting software
system, PET RECORDS SYSTEM (PRS) tm, the most complete package for
maintaining records for purebred dogs. PRS runs on the popular IBM-PC
and other microcomputers which are compatible with it. PRS is designed
for both the hobbyist and the professional dog person. It was written
by Bob Keller, computer professional since 1968, and purebred dog breeder,
handler and kennel owner since 1967. PRS is the ONLY software that's
receiving informal recommendations from A.K.C. Kennel Inspectors!
"You have a wonderful program in PRS and ANYONE who breeds and sells
dogs should have a copy of it. It is really worth the money!"
...Kay H., Muldrow, OK, new PRS User.
We designed PRS to provide the maximum amount of capability at
the lowest price possible. PRS won't attempt to dazzle you with
fancy-looking screens, because that merely takes away computer resources
that are better used to perform meaningful tasks. We use tried-and-true
techniques to do more useful work than any other system on the market.
PRS was designed to operate under DOS, where it can work the fastest and
most efficiently. Ergonomically, PRS requires the least amount of physical
effort from the user, eliminating the need for a mouse. In fact, in
data-intensive applications such as recordkeeping, the use of a mouse
can actually cause the user extra work and needless arm/wrist movement.
And, PRS doesn't require you to have any computer knowledge or
experience. Over half of our customers are novice computer users, everyday
people. PRS does it all. The chore of recordkeeping is now reduced
dramatically, thanks to PRS.
"Most complete package offered, easy to follow prompts, and a very
affordable price. Worth every penny. (I've) recommended PRS to my
kennel friends." ...Barbara V., Charlotte, MI
PRS is a self-contained system. You don't have to buy any other
modules or data files (as some of our competitors require) in order to
take advantage of all that PRS has to offer. All of the necessary
programming is already contained in PRS, ready to work for you!
Our PRS User's Manual fully explains your use of the entire PRS
software; and it's written in common language that anyone can understand,
yet provides the user with an excellent knowledge of how PRS operates.
The User's Manual is supported with a large sample-data master file
that you can "play with" while you become familiar with the system.
"A few hours after the AKC Field Inspector left our kennel, she called
us back and recommended PRS as the most complete software on the
market." ...Janet T., Savannah, GA, when she ordered PRS v6.0.
PRS has been in use since 1986 by over 2,200 dog fanciers and
kennels worldwide. It meets and exceeds AKC requirements for record-
keeping, and can maintain a sizable file of dog records. It can
help you to meet USDA recordkeeping requirements too. PRS supports
all AKC, UKC, SKC and CKC recognized breeds, plus others. And since
the new APPDI Registry mirrors AKC requirements, PRS provides double
duty for commercial breeders!
"We bought PRS to replace T.O.P.S., and we just wanted to let you
know that PRS is GREAT!" ...Sam M., Sterling Hts., MI
PRS is a proven product! Some other systems might try to LOOK
like PRS, but NONE of them has our successful record of performance,
value and user satisfaction.
"Your PRS software is Exactly what I have been looking for, more than
just pedigrees. It includes everything a small exhibitor-breeder needs."
...T.W. Kelley, Richmond, TC
The two main functions of PRS are recordkeeping and reporting.
All pertinent records regarding your dogs are maintained in the PRS
Master File, which becomes the data base for all PRS reports. History
reports are extracted from the Master File, linking with other related
records, to provide complete and accurate information.
Unlike other systems, PRS does NOT require you to input pedigree
charts in order to print them. All that is needed is a single record
for each dog that might appear in a pedigree, much like a dog's AKC
Stud Book entry. Once entered in the Master File, you will NEVER have
to type that dog's name again for it to appear in a pedigree. PRS
uses a search procedure similar to that used by the AKC, keyed on a
unique identification number, to produce each and every pedigree you
desire. You'll NEVER have to type a pedigree again!
In the following pages, we'll describe in more detail, the work
that PRS can do for you.
RECORDKEEPING
"It's great - now I don't have to have multiple books/papers to keep track
of my dogs & their show/breeding records!!" Benita B., Connersville IN
PRS maintains nine areas of information in fifteen different
record formats within its Master File. Those areas are:
1. Individual Dog. This describes an individual dog, its breed,
registered name, registration number, sire, dam, whelp date, color
and markings, breeder and current owner, and more. It provides
the information needed to search and print pedigrees. A separate
Degrees record maintains up to eight titles and degrees that might
not otherwise be a part of the dog's name. An Additional Registrations
record maintains up to eight other registrations for dogs that are
multiple-registered, such as in both the AKC and the APPDI.
2. Transfers of Ownership. These records detail any transfer of
ownership of an individual dog, and supplement the Individual Dog
information on PRS reports. Transfer records maintain disposition
information as required by the AKC and APPDI.
3. Health. These records are used to record matters of health for an
individual dog. Information such as vet's name, applicable
account number, cost of service, and a free-form information note
(160 characters) is maintained. A separate Innoculations record
maintains up to eight different shots, and their expirations, per
dog, to record the dog's current shot status.
4. Informational. These records are similar to Health records, and
maintain similar information of a non-health nature. They can be
used to record data about grooming, training sessions, phenotype,
genetic notes, or any other type of information that you choose.
5. Breeding. These records maintain all information pertaining to a
particular breeding. They are recorded for both the stud dog and
the brood bitch. In the case of the brood bitch, these records
are later linked to Puppy In Litter records to provide full AKC
and APPDI records on each puppy whelped in that litter.
6. Puppy In Litter. These records identify each individual puppy
whelped in a litter. They contain identification and transfer
information, as required by the AKC and APPDI. When linked with
the appropriate Breeding record, they provide a full set of
AKC and APPDI required records. (PRS first used "slash" numbers
to identify puppies in 1986, several years BEFORE the AKC adopted
the practice!)
7. Conformation Show. These records maintain a complete history of
each dog's entry at an AKC dog show. Data about the class, judge,
and placement, are maintained for three levels of competition
(breed, group and best in show). Championship points, handler
name, and other data, are also maintained. A separate Judge
Critique record allows you to keep critiques on conformation
judges, whether you've shown under them or not.
8. Obedience Trial. As with Conformation records, these maintain a
history of each dog's entry into an Obedience Trial. Similar
information is recorded, along with a brief information note to
critique the judge, or to describe any special achievement or
circumstance.
9. Working Trial. These records maintain a history of each dog's
entry into a field trial, or similar event. Information about
the stake, judge, placement and points are maintained for up to
three stakes and/or classes in a field trial. A separate Trial
Critique record can be kept for critique data on one of the
trial judges. You can use working trial records to record hunting,
herding, lure coursing, schutzhund, and most other working events.
In total, these record formats provide a complete, all-around
history of each dog on file. They form the basis of PRS's printed
reports, and the vital information needed by the search routines in
the Pedigree print function.
PRS PRINTED REPORTS
"PRS has exceeded my expectations...even with my dot matrix printer
the pedigrees look good." ...Cynthia S., Winchester, KY
While most of PRS's output is viewable on the monitor, its real
value is in the printed reports. PRS provides a selection of reports
that enables you to produce complete hardcopy records of your own
dogs at any time. For those reports that must meet AKC requirements,
the information is provided in a format similar to the standard AKC
forms. PRS printed reports are designed to fit a standard 8-1/2" x 11"
finished page, either continuous form or single sheet. All PRS reports
are printed in "portrait" format.
PRS's current list of printed reports is as follows:
1. Animals On File List. This shows the basic information in each
Individual Dog record in your Master File. It gives a quick summary
of all the dogs that you currently have recorded.
2. Current Records List. Lists the key fields, and some brief summary
data, for either all records on file, or only those for a specific
dog. Useful for recapping a dog's set of records.
3. Individual Records. This group of reports prints the full history
of an Individual dog, in a structured format. Information is
printed in chronological order. Each report group is headed with
the Individual record information for the subject dog. In the
course of printing, you can select any of the following groups of
Individual Records to print:
A. Ownership & Transfers Records provide a full description of
the dog, its titles and degrees, additional registration
numbers, and its ownership trail. This report exceeds AKC
and APPDI requirements.
B. Health & Informational Records provide a full history of
medical and general information about the dog, including its
current shot status and next heat cycle.
C. Breeding & Litter Records provide a detailed account of each
breeding of the dog. For stud dogs, full particulars about the
breeding are printed. For brood bitches, additional data is
printed about each individual puppy whelped and its disposition.
This report exceeds AKC and APPDI requirements.
D. Conformation Show Records print a full history of the dog's
progress at AKC dog shows. Placements, from individual
breed classes, right up to Best In Show, are printed in an
easy-to-read format. Judge critiques appear in this portion.
Championship points, if earned, are printed, and a total
appears at the end of this report group.
E. Obedience Show Records print a full history of the dog's
progress at AKC obedience trials. The dog's score,
placement, class and judge are printed, along with a brief
information comment or critique. Runoff data, if applicable,
can also be entered.
F. Working Trial and Critique Records print a full history of the
dog's progress at AKC Field Trial, Hunting, Herding, and
Schutzhund events. The Stake/Class name, judge, score and
placement can be maintained for up to three stakes and/or
classes, along with a critique on one of the judges.
4. Judge Critiques. This is a listing of the Judge Critiques within
your master file, either conformation, obedience, or working
trial. This report can be printed for all judges, or for a single
judge, by name.
5. A Vaccination Status Listing shows the current shot status for
all dogs in your Master File for which you are maintaining this
type of information. Shot type, date given, months effective, and
a computed expiration date are shown on this report. This report
can also show bitches' next heat cycles, if desired.
6. An Informational Extract report which summarizes all Informational
data in your Master File based on subject selection criteria that
you specify.
7. The Pedigree of any dog on file, in one of the following
variations:
A. A Certified Pedigree, 4- or 5-generation, containing
appropriate header data about the subject dog, and
user-inputted footing data (your kennel name, address, slogan,
etc.). Colors and markings print through the next-to-the-last
generation. Registration numbers and additional titles,
certificates and degrees print through the third generation,
room permitting. Champions' names appear in either bold print
or red ink, where your printer permits.
B. A Work Pedigree, which, when combined with the work pedigree
of the other dog in the mating, can provide a 5- or
6-generation pedigree of the resulting litter. This is useful
in planning future breedings. The work pedigree also includes
colors, registration numbers and additional titles, as in the
Certified pedigree. No headings or footings appear on work
pedigrees.
8. A Progeny List will show all first-generation offspring of the
subject dog, to the extent that those dogs are a part of your
Master File. Individual dogs and litters (as a whole) appear on
this report, along with the name of the other parent dog.
9. An Inbreeding Percentages Report, which shows all ancestors
within five generations of the subject dog, and the percentage
of the subject dog's pedigree that they each occupy. This is
useful in determining the influence of each ancestor. No need
for any "crystal ball", the data's right here!
10. A Descendants Listing which shows all descendants of the subject
dog or bitch, for up to 13 generations, by bloodline descendancy.
This listing is known as a "reverse pedigree" and is extremely
useful for locating descendants of a specific bloodline.
11. A Stud Service Contract can be printed for any male dog on file.
Information is further extracted from the Master File, and input
by the user, to complete the contract. The wording of the
contract itself can be easily changed by the user, through the
program, to meet specific needs and cases. Optionally, PRS will
create a Breeding record for the stud dog, in conjunction with the
printing of the Stud Service Contract, saving you that necessary
input operation.
12. A Sales Receipt can be printed to document the sale, gift, or
lease of a dog in your Master File. Optionally, PRS will update
your Master File to create a Transfer record (for an individually-
registered dog), or update the Puppy In Litter record (for a puppy
sale) with this transfer information, saving you this necessary
input operation. You can even maintain a set of "standard terms"
which PRS can insert into the body of the sales receipt.
13. Dog Show Entry Forms can be printed, following AKC entry form
protocol, for any AKC conformation show, obedience trial, field
trial, and hunting test. Data on up to 50 shows can be kept on file
at any one time. PRS prints the entire entry form...no special
forms are required. PRS Entry Forms are identical to the AKC forms
in content and size, and are accepted by all show superintendents.
14. A Variable Record List generator is a powerful reporting tool to
allow you to develop a wide range of data lists, based on user-
specified data-string searches, either against a selected record
format, or against all records in your Master File.
15. A Financial Summary Report which totals major categories of
income and expense amounts, as you've recorded them in your
PRS Master File. Similar in format to a Financial Statement,
the Financial Summary can be useful in managing kennel finances.
16. A Custom Report Generator which allows PRS users to create
customized reports from combinations of record formats supported in
the PRS Master File. Specific selection criteria and print data
fields are chosen by you, providing you with the ability to create
specialized reports for your own special needs. You can save up to
36 custom report setups for re-use later with newer data.
PRINTER SUPPORT
PRS comes preloaded with printer control codes for a wide variety
of popular printers, dot-matrix and laser (additional printers are
included with the full program...DEMO is limited due to disk size). And,
if your printer is not in that list, you can customize PRS to your specific
printer. PRS supports ALL IBM-PC compatible printers, including
lasers, through the use of a generic printer driver. Since the first
release of PRS, we have yet to encounter an IBM-compatible printer that
PRS will not support! PRS output is always routed to your LPT1 printer port.
*** NOTE ***
Support of your specific printer may require that you locate and
input specific printer control code sequences into PRS from your printer's
instruction manual. In some cases, support is limited to resident fonts,
and support of alternate fonts, styles or colors is not available. If you
have ANY question about your printer model, call us and we'll be happy to
tell you the level of PRS support provided.
MONITOR DISPLAYS
PRS is a menu-driven, user-friendly system. Additional prompts
are worded in a clear and easy-to-understand fashion. On-screen help
appears automatically during all update activity to assist the user,
and the entire manual is viewable on the monitor while in the program.
Record images are formatted on-screen during updating, inquiry and
report printing phases. A three-generation work pedigree is always
displayed, with champions in red, during pedigree printing. Most
structured output from PRS can be viewed on the monitor screen alone,
without the need of a printer. PRS screen displays are large, clear,
and easy to read and understand. No "buttons", "bars", or other system
"gadgets" to get in the way of the screen display in PRS!
PRS requires no special monitor or video card. PRS uses a white
background with black and colored text, for its monitor displays. PRS
will operate on monochrome monitors as well, and can be easily changed
to color monitor displays if and when you upgrade your system to a color
monitor. PRS uses screen mode 0, text only, which is compatible with
all graphics adapter cards.
SYSTEM CAPACITIES/REQUIREMENTS
PRS can hold approximately 1250 records in each Master File, with
a maximum of 36 individual Master Files at any time. While PRS does
not link between Master Files, you can change to another Master File
while you are in PRS, without having to exit the program. A Master File
is defined as a group of records that have something in common, such as,
all Poodles, or all Silkies, or all Judge Critiques.
For the average fancier, a Master File should easily accommodate full
histories for 20 to 30 currently-active dogs, and still have room for
several hundred more ancestor dogs for pedigree purposes. For those
who are active in more than one breed, you can create a Master File
for each separate breed, up to a maximum of 36 files, thus giving you
full record capacity for each breed. And you can exchange PRS Master Files
with other PRS users without difficulty.
PRS recognizes well over 350 named breeds, including all breeds
recognized and/or registered by the AKC, UKC, SKC and CKC. Many
foreign breeds, not yet registered in the U.S., are also included in
that number.
In order to allow for as much available memory for data records,
PRS does not do extensive editing on inputted data. We leave it up to
the user's intelligence, for the most part, to input data which is
correct and meaningful. Where certain codes or formats are required
of input data, on-screen help appears automatically. The User's
Manual is also on-line as a main menu choice.
From a technical standpoint, your computer must be an IBM-PC
or compatible, have at least 512K of available RAM, a hard disk with
at least 1.5MB of available space (add 1MB for each additional Master
File desired), DOS version 2.11 or newer, any type of monitor
(graphics not required), and a printer (ANY type) attached to the LPT1
port. PRS supports all IBM-compatible printers using control code
sequences of 12 codes or less. PRS is supplied on your choice of either
5.25" or 3.5" diskette. A mouse is not needed.
PRS is a DOS application, which means you do not have to have
Windows (tm) to run it. However, for the Windows (tm) user, PRS can be
run just like any other DOS application, simply and easily.
PRS can be installed ONE TIME ONLY, but it does provide a means
of regular backup of the entire system and a Reload utility in case
you experience a catastrophic hard disk failure.
COMPATIBILITY
PRS Version 6.0 is compatible with all previous versions of PRS,
and includes a conversion utility to upgrade your existing PRS Master
File to the Version 6.0 format, if necessary. PRS v5.0 users can
continue on without needing to convert their Master File.
FOLLOW-ON SUPPORT
Registered owners of PRS may receive technical support, as
needed, should any problems arise. Further, as enhancements are made
to PRS, registered owners will be advised of them automatically. We
know you'll be happy with PRS, and we are here to provide support as
close as your telephone, after the sale.

SOME COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT PET RECORDS SYSTEM...AND THEIR ANSWERS
Q. Will PRS run on my computer?
A. PRS will run on any IBM-PC or compatible which operates under
DOS 2.11 or newer. You must have a hard disk, and should have
a printer. PRS is delivered complete...there is nothing else to buy.
Q. Will PRS support my printer?
A. PRS supports ALL IBM-compatible printers, including the latest bubble,
inkjet, and laser printers. PRS comes pre-loaded with control
setups for a wide range of printers, even those that print in color;
and the user can customize PRS to his own printer, in case it is
not one of PRS's pre-loaded choices. We have yet to encounter an
IBM-compatible printer that PRS cannot support!
Q. Is PRS "user friendly"?
A. PRS is a menu-driven program...no "buttons" or "gadgets" to decipher.
On-screen help is automatic during the updating functions, and the
User's Manual is viewable on-screen within the program. It even
includes a one-page "No-Brainer's Guide To PRS" to get you started
using PRS with your own data. PRS screen displays are large and
easy-to-read. No microscopic screen data or clutter in PRS!
Q. How are dogs accessed in PRS?
A. PRS keys dogs with a 12-digit ID Number...no need to type in the dog's
complete name or search through some on-screen list of dog names just
to access his records. The ID# can be any combination of letters and
I * numbers, up to 12 digits, that YOU choose. You could use the dog's
M * call name, tattoo number, or registry Number, for example.
P * A separate, 12-digit kennel club registration number field exists to
O * store a dog's AKC number, even in their NEW, longer format. By the
R * way, the AKC REQUIRES YOU TO USE A SEPARATE IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM IN
T * YOUR RECORDKEEPING...something that PRS has been doing right from the
A * start. Don't consider ANY system that doesn't have an "ID Number"
N * access method! When the AKC man comes to your door, you want to give
T * him exactly what the rules say...an ID system in your software.
Q. How many pedigrees can PRS store?
A. PRS doesn't "store" pedigrees as documents...it stores ancestor
dogs and searches backwards from the subject dog, looking up sires
and dams, until it has enough generations to fill the selected
pedigree size. You NEVER have to type a pedigree chart again!
No moving/clicking a mouse around the screen over microscopic print.
To link a dog with ALL of his ancestors takes just 2 data fields,
nothing more. This is the EASIEST way to do pedigrees, ever!
Q. Does PRS come "pre-loaded" with AKC records?
A. No. If it did, chances are that very few of those records would be
pertinent to YOUR dogs and YOUR bloodlines. PRS doesn't waste space
on your computer with irrelevent data. Why pay for useless data? You
input only those dogs and items of data that are important to YOU.
Input sources for YOUR files will probably be hand-written records and
pedigrees that you already have on file.
Q. I have Windows. Can I use PRS?
A. Yes. PRS is an DOS application, which means that you can run it
on your computer by exiting Windows to the DOS level, then running
PRS as you would any other DOS application. The process is simple
and described in our PRS user's manual. Our customers have had no
difficulties running PRS with Windows in their computer. Use of a mouse
is actually a hindrance to data-intensive programs such as PRS. You
would have to first move the mouse and click an icon to make a choice,
then move your hands to the keyboard to enter data to the program.
PRS does not hinder you by requiring a mouse!
Q. How do I know that PRS was designed properly and is bug-free?
A. PRS was designed and written by Bob Keller, former AKC Licensed
Handler, former President of the Miniature Schnauzer Club of So.
California, owner of Starline Kennels (established 1967), and
computer professional since 1968. PRS has been in use at Starline
since 1985, and at over 2,200 other kennels worldwide since late
1986. PRS is a proven product. PRS has satisfied AKC and USDA
inspections. PRS is the ONLY software to be recommended by AKC
Field Inspectors. (Such recommendations have been on an informal
basis...the AKC does NOT officially endorse ANY software.)
Q. What if I have a problem? Is there technical support?
A. Experience has shown that our User's Manual is very complete at
answering user questions. However, we are available weekdays, by
phone, if you are having difficulty understanding something about
the system. We operate out of our 27-year-old kennel, NOT out of
a P.O. Box. We have no reason to hide from our customers behind
"resellers" or P.O. Boxes! Some of our competitors provide support
through an "extra-charge" forum on CompuServe, meaning you pay for
the call, you pay CompuServe's monthly fee, and you pay the "Plus"
charge for the support! One call to us does it for PRS!
Q. Do you provide updates?
A. You know, this is a question that reveals a major problem with
software today...the need for updates. We are quite proud of the
fact that PRS has only been updated four times (counting this one)
since it's release in 1986. We've never had to create an update to
correct a program bug, because we test PRS before we release it.
As a customer, you should not have to expect updates. Contrary to
what some authors have said, a program that is properly designed and
written at the outset does NOT have to be updated regularly. (One
of our competitors had at least THREE versions, 3.0, 3.08, and
3.10, all within ONE YEAR!)
Because we do upgrade PRS from time to time, to add new features or
meet new AKC requirements, we WILL notify you if an upgraded version
of PRS becomes available. We promise that you won't be flooded with
frequent updates when you buy PRS.
Q. Does PRS do accounting?
A. PRS keeps track of income and expenses related to data that you input
to PRS, and you can print the Financial Summary report to recap that
data for any time period you choose. Ask the I.R.S., and they'll
probably tell you that you should have a separate accounting system
for your kennel accounts that is NOT a part of some other recordkeeping
system. We would suggest that NONE of the dog software can compare
with popular financial systems, such as Quicken, and that you should
use software that has been written specifically for accounting
functions for that purpose.
Q. Since PRS does more than the competitors, why is PRS priced at
only $54.95?

"When somebody makes you pay for their "demo" disk, they're telling you
that they're not selling very many of the actual product! Anyway, why
should you PAY someone for their own sales literature? And, if their
"demo" is nothing but a "slide show", then you still don't know what
you're getting yourself into! Without ANY demo disk, you're risking
your money, as much as $190, in the hopes that you can get your money back
quickly and without a hassle. You should be able to TRY BEFORE YOU BUY,
with a FREE Demo Disk!" ...Bob Keller, Stanton, CA
"I looked at a lot of computer programs for dog records before deciding to
buy PRS. I had some doubts about The Breeders Standard, which your demo
confirmed. I purchased the demo disks from Sentinal Consultants and gave
up trying to load the Pedigree Plus program, which apparently takes a
huge amount of memory. I did manage to get one of their Show Trackers
loaded and after about two minutes I gave up trying to figure it out. I
don't have time or inclination to dink with a poorly designed program and
I hated the Sentinal program. CompuPed is hard to use. Anyhow, I was very
impressed with your demo, which seems to cover all the bases in record
keeping...in one nice program."
...Unsolicitated comments from Margie D., Monmouth, OR
"I had The Breeders Standard, but the AKC Rep who visited my kennels told
me that PRS has been getting great reviews." ...Carolyn A., W. Columbia, SC
"I'm dumping Kennel Management System for PRS! KMS uses too much space,
and is too complicated!" ...Debbie H., Pittsburgh, PA

Consumer Awareness Information
(The following information has been obtained either by us directly, or from
customers who had personal knowledge. We present it here for your use
in evaluating such software products, recognizing that most of you would
not normally have access to this data, nor will you likely read it in
other sales literature.)
******** INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY TRAVELERS ********
DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ ON COMPUTER BULLETIN BOARDS! THE GOOD
WORDS MAY BE COMING FROM THE PERSON WHO OWNS THE SOFTWARE COMPANY! OR,
HIS SALESMAN!
"John Tamburo", Antioch, IL, is the owner of "The Breeder's Standard",
"Man's Best Friend Software", and "MBF Software".
"Arnold Blank", Modesto, CA, (aka "Fred Johnson") is the person selling
something called "Kennel Management System Version 3.10".
"Jacquelyn Bailey", Lebanon, IN, is the owner of "Hampton Software".
(You can obtain the name, address and phone number of ANY PERSON operating
a business from a P.O. Box. Write to the Postmaster at that zip code,
include a photocopy of the ad, and cite "ASM Section 352.44e(1), Post
office boxholder information, Business use". There's no charge by the
USPS for this information. Know who you're dealing with!)
AND NOW, SOME SOFTWARE REVIEWS...
* We've seen "The Breeders Standard" V3.0 Demo, and it's just a slide show.
Important data fields that are MISSING include: Phone numbers throughout;
puppy fees for stud services/breedings; stud contracts; sales receipt/
contracts; judge critiques in all show/trial areas; multiple additional
registration numbers; miscellaneous data identifiable by subject; to name
a few. Add to this the microscopic names in their on-screen pedigree...
better have 20/20 eyesight! We invite you to compare PRS with "The B.S.",
and see if YOU don't come to the same conclusion as us...that PRS is the
Best In Show and Best In Trial.
* "Kennel Management System" was originally sold as "Pedigree System Manager".
For the record, "Kennel Management System Version 1.5" is a software system
that WE wrote in 1987 and then took off the market in 1991 due to the fact
that our customers preferred our PRS product by far. The person who now
calls his software "Kennel Management System" has begged us to "concentrate
on those features you feel are valuable, and helpful to the user". So, on
that basis, we can no longer describe his product herein! You'll just have
blow $5 for his demo to find out for yourself. Make sure you get the latest
version though...he's been through at least THREE in the last year!
(Just so you know what's involved in a "demo disk", our PRS FREE Demo Disk
costs us a total of $1.13 to produce and mail. Their's should too. Our
own advertising apparently made them lower their "demo" price from $20!)
* Despite what they say in their ad, the sample output that we received from
"Dog Breeder's Basics", by Hampton Software out of a P.O. Box in Lebanon, IN,
lacks many of the data fields required by AKC rules, including Sire, Dam,
paperwork dates, to name just a few. Their pedigrees lack registration
numbers on ancestors, and not even a certification statement. Dog's names
are limited to 30 characters, including all titles.
* "Pedigree Plus", a P.O. Box in Virginia, was reviewed by DOGworld (Feb.'93).
They said, "The user must accurately enter the dog's (full) name to ensure
that the user builds as complete a pedigree as possible. The user must also
remember to transfer files from the pedigree data file to the brood and stud
data files if records are changed." Other problems: Maximum of 8 puppies
in a litter! No place to record the puppy-buyer's name or address!
* Sentinal Consultants, in New Jersey, has had so many programs to sell that
its almost scary. "Just Pedigrees", "Pedigree Plus", "Annotated Pedigrees",
just to name a few...whew! Why anyone would want a program that does "just
pedigrees" is beyond us. Why input all that data just for pedigrees, when
you'll have to re-input it to some other software to meet AKC requirements?
Seems like wasted money and effort to us! Why spend a fortune on "pieces"?
* "DogTRAX" (now possibly called "DogBYTES") was reviewed in DOGworld, Apr'92.
They said, "The program does not match a litter to a dam or sire in the data
base." Oops! In their health module "space provided for the purpose of visit
and comment is (only) 25 characters each."
* "TOPS" was reviewed in DOGworld, Jan.'93, page 82: "Because the files do not
share information, the user may enter the same information in more than one
file and possibly do so incorrectly".
* "Caninus 4.0" costs $495.00, plus $8.50 shipping, plus sales tax to Florida
purchasers. It's complicated to use, and doesn't meet AKC requirements.
It's a rework from something called "Equinus", a program for race horses,
and many of the records don't relate to dogs.
* "Champions in Windows" needs 8 MEGS OF RAM! Plus, Windows 3.1! It costs
nearly FOUR TIMES the price of PRS! And the only thing it does that PRS
doesn't is show pictures and expense graphs! AND, it costs a whopping $190!
Those better be pretty great pictures and graphs! (They've been out less
than six months, and already on "enhanced Version 2.0"!)
* Has ANYBODY been able to get "Compu-Ped's" demo disk to run completely? And
if they did, was the program simple to operate?
* Dead And Gone...
BREEZE, BRIMS, Computerized Pedigree Service, Dogbreeder's Assistant, DogPed,
Kenl-Up, Kennel Keeper, Kennel Works, Pedigree "Freeware", Pedigreed Paws,
PedPro, Ruffware, TOPS, and TRAC.
